Hicaco
The Young Coastal Corregimiento
It is one of the youngest townships in the district, created by Law 34 of May 10, 2012, segregated from the township of Rio Grande. In 2023, it had a population of 2,007 inhabitants and an area of 94.5 km². This corregimiento includes several communities, including Tigre de los Amarillos, Los Machos, El Flor No.1, Los Mangos, La Colmena, Agua Blanca or Pueblo Nuevo, Cabecera del Doctor, La Gorgona, Pela Gato, Santa Catalina, Lagartero, Vista Hermosa, Farfán and La Pifa or La Laguna.
It is important to note that Santa Catalina, an important tourist center, is part of Hicaco. The recent creation of Hicaco and the inclusion of Santa Catalina within its boundaries suggest that this new corregimiento was probably formed to more effectively manage and develop the growing tourism sector around Santa Catalina and its surrounding coastal areas.
